How to spot it: Look at the time allocated for data preparation. If it's less than 40% of the total implementation timeline, they're not being honest.
Real example: A "customer churn prediction AI" vendor showed a 12-week implementation timeline with only 2 weeks for data preparation. The actual project took 9 months, with 5 months spent just getting the data ready.
What to ask: "In your most recent three implementations that were similar to our use case, what was the average time from contract signature to production deployment?"

What it actually means: These metrics typically:
Compare against no solution rather than simpler alternatives
Reflect a tiny, non-representative sample
Omit important context about what else changed
How to spot it: The more precise the percentage, the more suspicious you should be. Real results tend to be expressed in ranges.
Real example: A vendor claiming "83% accuracy in predicting customer behaviors" was actually measuring their recall rate on a perfectly balanced test dataset that looked nothing like real-world data distributions.
What to ask: "What was the incremental improvement of your solution compared to a simpler, rules-based approach on the same problem?"

What to ask: "If we provide everything listed here as our responsibility, do you contractually guarantee the performance metrics you've claimed?"
